Brothers, when was the last time you genuinely recalled being authentically happy? Happy without a specific incidence to create laughter? I am talking about just the sensation of any of the many definitions of happiness. Go ahead, take a second to Google happy or hit the link https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/happy

It’s okay to laugh, smile, or even giggle like African American men. Here are a few tips that I, as an African American man, have found helpful in maintaining my happiness:

  1.  Practice gratitude
    • Regularly reflect on the things in your life for which you are grateful. Keeping a gratitude journal or sharing your appreciation with others can help foster a positive outlook and increase overall happiness. This practice empowers you to shape your own happiness.
    • Cultivate an appreciation for your culture, heritage, and accomplishments as an African American man to further enhance feelings of self-worth and happiness.
  2. Develop meaningful connections
    • Invest in relationships with friends, family, and community members who support, encourage, and uplift you.
    • Engage in social activities that foster a sense of belonging and togetherness, such as joining cultural groups, participating in community events, or volunteering for causes important to you. For instance, you could join a local book club, volunteer at a community center, or participate in a cultural festival.
  3. Find joy in everyday experiences
    • Embrace the beauty and joy in simple, everyday moments, like spending time in nature, savoring a favorite meal, or laughing with loved ones. This mindfulness can bring a sense of peace and appreciation to your life.
    • Actively seek out experiences that bring you happiness and make time for them regularly, even if only for a few minutes each day.
  4. Identify your strengths and passions
    • Discover the unique talents, skills, and interests that make you who you are and bring you joy.
    • Engage in activities that align with your strengths and passions, and consider sharing them with others through teaching, mentoring, or volunteering.
  5. Prioritize self-care
    • Take care of your physical and mental well-being by prioritizing healthy habits like regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques. Remember, your well-being is a priority, not a luxury. It’s your responsibility to take care of yourself.
    • Seek professional help, such as therapy or counseling, to address any mental health concerns and foster personal growth. Remember, seeking professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and can be a crucial step in your journey toward happiness and well-being.

Following these strategies and finding the path to happiness that works best for you can enhance your overall well-being and mental health as an African American man. Remember, happiness is not a destination but a journey, so embrace the

process and find joy. Your trip to happiness is filled with hope and optimism.
